In 1972 I was Father (Major) Shea's Chaplain's assistant at the Ft Colon Catholic Church in Panama where we had to share the church and church office with the Protestant Chaplain and his 2 assistants. One day Fr Shea overheard me getting verbally hammered on scripture by one of the Protestant chaplain assistants named Chuck on why us Catholics should remove all the statues from the church since it was idol worship. Fr Shea overhearing the conversation came to my rescue and calmly walked in wearing his jungle fatigues and lighting his pipe asked Chuck to take out his wallet and look at the picture he carried of his wife and said.."Chuck ...the statues are visual aides." To this day I'll always remember the impact Fr Shea's few Christ like words of wisdom could make a room go silent.

Monsignor was such a special person. My husband and I will never forget the first mass at the new church in Bigfork. Fr Shea got on the platform, looked around, and did the YES thing...the big fist in front of the body. Everyone applauded for five minutes. It was so typical of something he would do...fantastic!!

Though he was no longer at the church, his spirit will be there forever. We wish you all the blessings God can send, the love of Christ, and the power to heal from this great loss. We must remember that he is now where he wants to be...in the arms of our Lord.

God bless you and Donald Shea always.

Fr Shea was my boss and mentor. When I was named the Chief of Chaplains in 2011 he was the first person I called. He always had great "from the hip" wisdom. A true Soldier's Chaplain, he will be missed. He embodied the Chaplain Coros motto "For God and Country." Rest in peace
Fr Don Rutherford.

Fr. Don was Chief of Chaplains when I was Chief of Staff. As such he was my spiritual advisor and I could not have had a better one. More importantly, he was a soldier's "padre" and they identified with him and loved him. He was one of them and always there for them. No one contributed more during this period of change. On behalf of all the soldiers he served during his many years of service I will say good bye to him on Friday. He now becomes one God's soldiers and I am sure will continue to be there for all of us!
