James (Jim) Grannis Thompson passed peacefully at home surrounded by his children on Jan. 20, 2022 at the age of 87. Jim was born Nov. 27, 1934 in Elizabeth, NJ to parents Marjorie & Boyd Thompson. Following high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy & served till 1955 on a floating dry dock as a Metal Smith Petty Officer 2nd Class. After serving, Jim was accepted into the Architecture program at the UofM, he joined Alpha Rho Chi fraternity & graduated in 1959. Jim then met the love of his life, Carol (Honey) Quade, & the two were married in 1961. They spent time in Alta Utah, Seattle WA & Phoenix AZ, before settling in MPLS, raising their family & starting his Architecture practice. Jim enjoyed making wine, sailing Lake Calhoun, canoeing the boundary waters, family ski trips & teaching skiing. Jim also found time to teach architecture at the Mpls Community & Technical College. In 2005, Jim & Honey retired to Kalispell, MT to be close to their daughters & grandchildren. Jim loved spending time w/all his grandchildren who live in Chicago IL and Whitefish MT. In retirement Jim loved skiing, camping trips, & working in his yard. He served on the Flathead County Planning & Zoning Board & was very active in his homeowner assoc. Jim is survived by his 3 children, Brad Thompson, Tracy Anderson, & Nicole (Cody) McCarthy, his sister Edith Penick, 7 grandchildren, & 4 nieces & nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Honey in 2019. Jim will be forever missed. A memorial for both Jim & Honey will take place this fall in Mpls, MN.
